COMPUTERIZED CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY

Corneal topography is the most accurate method of corneal curvature examination assisted by computer analysis. A corneal topographer projects a series of illuminated rings onto the corneal surface, which are reflected back into the instrument. The reflected rings of light are analyzed by the computer and a topographical map of the cornea is generated. The topographical map and computerized analysis reveals any distortions of the cornea, such as keratoconus or corneal scarring, as well as the corneal curvature and meridians of astigmatism. These measurements of the cornea are essential for post corneal surgery patients, specialized contact lens fitting and especially Orthokeratology. This method gives us a lot more information on the cornea allowing us to fit contact lenses on a mathematical 3 dimensional model without trial and error fitting techniques previously used. Related to these topographers is Z-wave technology whereby these computerized maps are sent directly, via the internet, to contact lens lathes (contact lens manufacturing equipment) in laboratories in the United States to manufacture custom designed contact lenses for the most complex corneal shapes which are impossible to fit by other means. This allows us to fit as accurately as possible patients with distorted corneas, post lasik corneas, corneal grafts, keratoconus, irregular astigmatism. These highly specialized and customized contact lenses are as unique as a finger print.
